A Conference for Historians and Activists

A second plenary, late afternoon Saturday, features two leading Middle East Historians, Zachary Lockman of New York University and Dina Rizk Khoury of George Washington University. There will also be more than twenty panels, roundtables, and workshops; details are on the conference web site – again, that’s http://www.historiansagainstwar.org/hawconf . Here is a sampling of some of the topics: Vietnam-Era Soldiers and the Recrafting of Historical Memory Collaboration or Resistance? U.S. Labor, American Empire, and the War in Iraq The Libertarian Antiwar Tradition from the 1930s to the 1950s Sequence of Superpowers in the Middle East: Britain and the U.S. Iran and the U.S: The Current Crisis and the Emerging World Order Traditions and Turning Points in U.S. Foreign Policy Middle East historian Irene Gendzier, who will be part of two sessions, wrote this about the schedule of sessions: "This is the most fantastic looking conference!! I'm upset at having to be a participant in one panel when nearly all of the others at the same time seem compelling. How you have done this I don't know but congratulations!!!" Early registration (now extended to March 31) is $40 regular or $25 student / low-income. The fee includes lunch on Saturday and coffee, pastries, and fruit Saturday and Sunday mornings. You can register and pay on-line or by mail – see the web site. See the web site also for hotel information, and for a link to a flyer advertising the conference.

Mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights and our allies will host a major convening that weekend, to mark the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on April 4,1968. We are coordinating our efforts with the local April Fourth Foundation in Memphis. We expect thousands to attend the events that weekend. We will celebrate Dr. King's life. And in an era of environmental devastation and social suffering, we will also uplift positive solutions from today's generation of visionary leaders. We will place a special focus on the ecological solutions that can heal the Earth while bringing jobs, justice, wealth and health to vulnerable people. In the aftermath of Katrina, in the face of global warming and global war, King would have worked for a peaceful, green economy -- strong enough to lift people out of poverty and restore hope. A bullet killed the dreamer, but not the dream. And that dream has continued to grow and evolve over the decades, in the minds and hearts of freedom fighters. It's hard to believe it, but since King's murder, two strong generations have been born and grown into adulthood. April 4th will create a special opportunity for leaders and activists from those generations to come together and accept the full mantle of service and leadership. In that spirit, the convening will be called: "The Dream ... Reborn." We are excited about this important opportunity to honor a great man -- and to celebrate two generations of great leaders, who have taken inspiration from his legacy. If you would like to help out, let us know. We need your support. And we look forward to seeing you in Memphis. Ella Baker Center can't survive without the support of people like you. Please take a moment to support us today: www.ellabakercenter.org/donate Not on our list-serve yet? (Maybe this message was forwarded to you.) Annual Space Organizing Conference: Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space
The U.S. Strategic Command (StratCom) for years has been the site from which a nuclear war would be controlled. Since 9/11, its mission has expanded. It is now also command central in the U.S. "War on Terror" and for the U.S. plans to dominate space militarily. This "New StratCom" is responsible for overseeing any Global "First Strikes," the National Security Agency's "warrantless wiretaps," and Ballistic Missile Defense. StratCom (at Offutt AFB) today is the most dangerous place on the face of the earth. It is secretive. Its mission is destabilizing. It operates outside the law. And its transformation has occurred so quickly, most of the world is completely unaware of its missions and dangers. The Global Network brings together world citizens who will, for the first time, gather to shine a light on what StratCom has become. Building global awareness is essential if we are to get StratCom to back away from the brink. The conference will be hosted by Global Network affiliate Nebraskans for Peace.

Nonviolent Communication Workshop
Westminster Presbyterian Church 3737 Liberty Road South Salem, Oregon 97302
Nonviolent Communication (NVC), also called compassionate communication, was developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD, a clinical psychologist and founder of the Center for Nonviolent Communication. The process of NVC helps connect us with what is alive in ourselves and in others moment-to-moment, with what we or others could do to make life more wonderful, and with an awareness of what gets in the way of natural giving and receiving. NVC strengthens our ability to inspire compassion from others and respond compassionately to others and ourselves. NVC guides us to reframe how we express ourselves and how we hear others, and shows us how to resolve conflicts, by focusing on what we and others are observing feeling, needing, and requesting.

For example, one year, Silverton High School students led ‘behind-the-scenes’ tours of The Garden’s lower wetlands. Join us for environmentally themed lectures and demonstrations by Oregon experts, plenty of activities for kids, browse the plant and art sale, or kick up your heels with local student and professional musicians. For more details on our Earth Day event, check for updates at www.oregongarden.org/calendar/April.html. Come support environmental stewardship while enjoying spring blooming at The Oregon Garden.
